012 Urban Songline, 2012 – Tempelhof Airport, Berlin, Germany

A choreography for kite-surfers and the goddess of victory Nike in relationship to Albert Speer’s design for the terminal building at Tempelhof Airport. The performance is a live sound piece derived from the movement of the kite-surfers and their chariot rider Nike as an attempt to re-arrange the power-structure in the field; now an important re-creational hub in Neuköln Berlin that once was destined to become the main airport of Hitler’s Third Reich ‘world capital’ Germania.

The music for the performance is created from the movement of the kite-surfers’ wheels & wings and the fabric and movement of Nike. This project is to become a sound-monument for the convoluted energies in Tempelhof Airport and should be installed as (semi-) permanent sound-piece in the field after it’s performance. This work is developed in collaboration with Cologne-based choreographer Reut Shemesh.

Part of the project Urban Songlines, a utopian/dystopian series of collaborative translations of buildings, urban structures and public spaces into music through site-specific sound-generation. These performances are a way of connecting to places by listening to them as well as a research into how we use and experience the public domain and to what degree we can claim ownership over it, discussing notions of inclusion, becoming and belonging.
